Free Parking in Copenhagen: The Honest 2026 Guide

Free parking in Copenhagen is real: free zones, three-hour spots, a free hour on public holidays, even 60 free minutes a day. Here's where the free options actually are, how to spot them on a map, and the caveats nobody prints on the sign.

Copenhagen has a reputation for being an expensive place to park, and the reputation is earned. The red zone runs 45 kr an hour during the day. But here's the part that rarely gets said out loud: free parking in Copenhagen genuinely exists. Whole public roads with no restrictions and no payment. Streets where the first three hours cost nothing. A free hour on public holidays. All of it real, and all of it legal.

So why does it feel like a myth? Because almost nobody in the parking business has a reason to point at it. Most parking apps earn their money when you pay, which means a free street is, commercially speaking, a dead end. The information isn't hidden, exactly. It's just never been anyone's job to show it to you. If you've ever typed gratis parkering København into a search bar and come away more confused than when you started, that's why.

Most parking apps only show up when there's something to charge you for. We built our map to show you where there isn't.

The four kinds of free parking the app knows

Legal Parking treats free parking as a first-class citizen: the same map, the same detail, the same care as the paid zones. Here's what it tracks:

Free, by the numbers

0 kr to register free parking. No minimum fee, no service fee.

60 minutes of free parking per vehicle per day, registered in-app.

First hour free after 08:00 on Danish public holidays, applied automatically.

510 kr is the standard Copenhagen parking fine you're steering well clear of.

How to find free streets before you even drive there

The map has a dedicated filter labeled "Free Zone – No time limit or payment." Flip it on and the city redraws itself around what costs nothing. Streets are color-coded, so free parking reads at a glance next to the red, green, blue, and yellow paid zones. No decoding, no cross-referencing municipal PDFs.

Even better, you can scout before you leave home. Type an address or postcode into the destination search and the map jumps straight to where you're going. A bottom sheet lists the five nearest garages and lots (handy when off-street is the right answer), but the on-street picture, including any free streets a block or two out, is drawn in color on the map itself. Pan around your destination for thirty seconds and you'll know whether the free option exists before your keys leave the bowl.

Registering free parking at 0 kr (and why we built it)

In Copenhagen, parking is registered digitally through the municipality's Parking Rights Service (PRS): it's tied to your license plate, there's no paper ticket in the windshield, and enforcement officers can verify it on the spot. Legal Parking's Start Free Parking flow registers your free session the same official way, at exactly 0 kr. No minimum fee. No service fee. No rounding tricks.

Why build a flow that earns us nothing? Because we think parking isn't a transaction. It's everything between two drives, and a parking app should be useful for all of it. If we only cared about the parks that pay us, we'd be quietly steering you toward paid streets like everyone else. Every park matters, paid or free. That's the whole idea.

The honest caveats (please read this part)

A guide that only tells you the good news isn't a guide, it's an advert. So:

One more boundary worth knowing: Legal Parking covers Copenhagen today, with more Danish cities on the roadmap. If your free-parking hunt takes you further afield, the map's colors end where our coverage does. And if free isn't in the cards today, at least go in knowing what each zone color actually costs, and how to stay on the right side of the rules either way.
