Free Parking in Copenhagen: The Honest 2026 Guide

Copenhagen has a reputation for being an expensive place to park, and the reputation is earned. The red zone runs 45 kr an hour during the day. But here's the part that rarely gets said out loud: free parking in Copenhagen genuinely exists. Whole public roads with no restrictions and no payment. Streets where the first three hours cost nothing. A free hour on public holidays. All of it real, and all of it legal.

So why does it feel like a myth? Because almost nobody in the parking business has a reason to point at it. Most parking apps earn their money when you pay, which means a free street is, commercially speaking, a dead end. The information isn't hidden, exactly. It's just never been anyone's job to show it to you. If you've ever typed gratis parkering København into a search bar and come away more confused than when you started, that's why.

The four kinds of free parking the app knows

• 3-hour free zones. Streets where parking is free but time-limited. One piece of general advice for Denmark applies here: in time-limited spots, set your parking disc (p-skive) when you arrive. Do it before you walk away, not from memory afterwards.
• The holiday free hour. On Danish public holidays, the first hour after 08:00 is free. You don't have to remember which days qualify; the app applies the benefit automatically when you register.
• 60 free minutes a day. Every vehicle gets up to 60 free minutes per day, registered in-app. Quick errand, school pickup, "I'll just be a minute" that becomes forty. All covered.

How to find free streets before you even drive there

The map has a dedicated filter labeled "Free Zone – No time limit or payment." Flip it on and the city redraws itself around what costs nothing. Streets are color-coded, so free parking reads at a glance next to the red, green, blue, and yellow paid zones. No decoding, no cross-referencing municipal PDFs.

Even better, you can scout before you leave home. Type an address or postcode into the destination search and the map jumps straight to where you're going. A bottom sheet lists the five nearest garages and lots (handy when off-street is the right answer), but the on-street picture, including any free streets a block or two out, is drawn in color on the map itself. Pan around your destination for thirty seconds and you'll know whether the free option exists before your keys leave the bowl.

The honest caveats (please read this part)

A guide that only tells you the good news isn't a guide, it's an advert. So:

• Signs on-site always win. If the physical sign disagrees with the app, believe the sign. GPS can be inaccurate, especially between tall buildings, so verify the zone from the signage before you rely on it.
• Middelalderbyen is different. In the Medieval City, parking is allowed only in marked bays. The app warns you before payment there, but the bays rule applies whether you're paying or not.
• Rules have fine print that changes. Some zones have free windows, and the app shows exactly when, live. That's why we're not printing a list of specific streets in a blog post that will quietly age. Check the map; it's current.
• No guarantees. We remove the guesswork; we can't promise a fine never happens. What we can do is make sure that when you park free, it's genuinely free and officially registered.
