Everyone has lived this moment. You're back at the parking garage with shopping bags, tired kids, or a flight-delayed brain. The garage has four identical levels of identical grey pillars. You reach for your phone. One bar. Then none. The map app spins. The "smart car" apps? They assume your car phones home and your phone has internet. Three floors underground, neither is true.
We built Find My Car for precisely that moment. And because most of our engineering decisions were about what happens when there's no connection, it works in places that would break a typical car finder.
Saved the moment you park, automatically
When you start a parking session in Legal Parking, the app captures your phone's position and stores it with your parking record. No extra taps, nothing to remember. As the app itself puts it: "Saved from your phone's position when the parking started."
Not starting a paid session? Parking on a free street, in a private lot, or somewhere the app doesn't cover? Drop a pin manually with Save car location. One tap, and your car's spot is remembered.
Nice detail: it works even without GPS permission
If GPS is unavailable or you've declined location permission, the manual pin simply saves wherever you aim the map marker. The pin wins. You stay in control, and it still works.
Why it works underground when other apps don't
Here's the trick, and it's the honest kind of trick: opening Find My Car involves no server call. Your car's coordinates are already on your phone before you walk away from the car. So when you come back and open Find My Car:
- No network needed. The location is read from your device, not fetched from the cloud.
- No GPS spin-up. The app uses your phone's last known position to show the distance to your car instantly. No staring at a spinner while your phone hunts for satellites through concrete.
- No dead ends. If your phone genuinely has no recent position (it happens deep underground), the distance simply hides, and directions still work the moment you're back in the open.
Your car's location is already on your phone. That's why it works where the internet doesn't.
Private by design
A car finder knows something quite personal: where you are and where your car sleeps. So we made a deliberate architectural choice: manually saved car locations are stored only on your device and are never uploaded. Finding your car is a same-phone activity, and an unregistered position has no business leaving your pocket.
From "somewhere on P3" to standing next to it
Open Find My Car and you'll see roughly how far away your car is ("About 350 m from your position"). When you're above ground, one tap hands you off to Apple Maps or Google Maps with walking directions straight to the saved spot.
Two honest limitations, because we'd rather you know: the distance shown is straight-line, not walking route. And inside a deep garage, the final few meters are still on you. We get you to the right entrance and the right spot; the pillar maze is your victory lap.
Why a parking app cares where your car is
Most parking apps consider the job done when your payment clears. We think that's backwards. Parking isn't a transaction. It's the gap between two drives, and everything in that gap matters: whether the sign really allows it, whether you could have parked free around the corner, and yes, whether you can find the car again.
